 BJH Controls is proud to announce we have been presented with a “Highly Commended” award at the 2010 Process and Control Engineering (PACE) Zenith Awards Dinner. The award was an acknowledgement of the technical innovation for the “Mixing Room Optimisation Project”, in the category of Automotive & Manufacturing.


The PACE Zenith Awards is considered a most prestigious industry awards program. The 2010 award nominations where made up of a record number of exceptional projects from across Australia and New Zealand, which were recognised as companies that show leadership in engineering projects, technical excellence and innovation.


Thanks to our Engineering team from our Melbourne office, who were able to deliver this complex project, on budget and on time.

The EcoBiz program was completed by us throughout 2008 and early 2009, and involved assessment of our energy useage and environmental management strategies over a period of time.

Platinum status was attained by reducing our energy useage, employing a range of sustainable practices and neutralising the calculated emissions relating to our energy and transport.

We believe we have a responsibility to give back more than we take, and this includes our relationship with our environment. Participation in the program provided many benefits to our business and increased all employees’ awareness that environmental sustainability need not cost any more, and our understanding that one company or even one person can make a difference.

Bernie Hollaway accepted the award on behalf of BJH Controls, stating "We are excited to have our skill and effort recognised by our peers, and we greatly appreciate the vote of confidence given to BJH Controls and our employees. It is very satisfying to receive recognition and appreciation for a job we all passionately enjoy".

As this is the first time we have entered the awards, we were very excited by the result. In the Chemicals and Petrochemicals category, our Process Vessel Pressure Control was also listed as a finalist. Both projects raised significant interest from many enquirers on the night. we also see this as an award for our customers, who trust us to provide the innovative solutions that enable them to optimise their processes and maximise their assets in an increasingly competitive global market.

An additional rear office has been added to provide more programming and meeting space, a separate kitchen has been created, and the front office has been fitted out. Signage at the front of the workshop has also been improved.

A variety of sustainability measures have been undertaken by us, including:
• recycling
• switching to 100% post-consumer recycled paper where able
• reduction of electricity useage by changes to lighting and installation of easy-off switches for computer equipment
• continued involvement in the Greenfleet program for our company vehicles
• purchase of green power for our energy needs

We will continue to develop and promote a culture of environmental awareness, waste reduction and sustainable decision making within BJH Controls.

In the Chemicals & Petrochemicals category, we were nominated for our Process Vessel Pressure Control, which uses fuzzy logic as a replacement for PID controls to dramatically reduce pressure fluctuations from 10% to 0.5% in the manufacture of inorganic chemicals, at zero hardware cost to our customer.

In the Power & Energy Management category, our Solid Fuel Boiler PLC upgrade for the timber industry resulted in significant fuel savings, improved efficiencies, reduced waste and enhanced environmental benefits for our customer.

Leon has over 25 years' experience in factory and process automation, commencing as a Special Class Electrician in the automotive industry and backed up with an Associate Diploma in Electronic Engineering.

In his spare time, Leon is a proud father to his three children and a keen cyclist who competes in the "Around the Bay in a Day" event.

Trevor has been moonlighting as an instructor at the local TAFE, imparting his extensive knowledge in the areas of Electrotechnology, PLC Programming and Electronics. We can safely say that his students are learning from a master!

As part of our ongoing committment to training and development of future technicians, BJH Controls has donated Majellis software to the TAFE for the students to use. Otherwise known as the “M&M” stand, it featured Rockwell’s Integrated Architecture, including compact machine solutions and machine safety. Visitors to the display watched a pick-and-place robotic system which tracked, vacuum picked and dispensed the lollies. No wonder it was such a popular stand!
